Psalm 41:1-3 - Blessed is he who has regard for the weak; the Lord delivers him in times of trouble. The Lord will protect him and preserve his life; he will bless him in the land and not surrender him to the desire of his foes. The Lord will sustain him on his sickbed and restore him from his bed of illness. Illness and disease have a wide range of effects on the body. One of which is an illness can leave you bedridden while recuperating. Though at first glance, resting while recuperating may seem to be a good thing; but in truth, the body may have its energy restored; however, there is a danger of losing muscle mass. According to nursingtimes.net, in their article, "Effects of Bedrest 3: Musculoskeletal and Immune Systems, Skin and Self-Perception," not using those muscles can result in loss of muscle strength. This is one reason why you may feel weak after being sick. So what can we do to keep from losing muscle mass? Here are a few things that I do: 1. If I can get out of bed, I walk around inside my house three to four times a day. 2. I sit up in bed as often as I can rather than lay in bed all day. 3. And, I do word searches, crossword puzzles or other activities to stimulate my brain as well as my body. Follow the link below to the Live Strong website and learn about leg strengthening exercises after being bedridden. The Bible verses above were written by King David near the end of his life. He was sick and his many enemies spoke to him in malice. They couldn’t wait for David to die so that they could take over. But David was not in this alone. He turned to the Lord knowing that in the end He would rescue him. That is where we can draw strength, as we go through a season of illness. And, no matter how long you have to remain in bed, as the Bible verses above state, the Lord will sustain us on our sick bed. What do you do to keep from losing muscle mass when you are sick?
